A pop up art gallery

For weeks now my Dad has been urging me to pay a visit to a pop up art gallery that has appeared in town. Yesterday I finally got there. The fantastic art works on show have been produced by one man, Gerald Thornton, a self taught local artist who paints wonderful images of local scenes and local historical events. Gerald is very clever at capturing light and shade which I think creates a feel of a bygone age.

I was so thrilled to have Gerald all to myself for a while. We chatted about his work and what inspires him to paint and he told me the stories behind each piece of work. It was the best hour and a half I've spent in a while - truly inspiring!

The Forest of Dean where we live is historically known for coal mining, these paintings are created from memory of when Gerald was a boy and his father worked in the mines. This one shows his father returning home at the end of a hard day. I've bought a print of this one for my art room, I love the colours.

I loved this one too.

What do you think?

  1. I am glad to hear you had the chance to chat. I love to hear other artists talk about their inspiration and find it a great way to re-affirm our common humanity. (Sorry, that sounds a bit deep but I couldn't find a better way to say it).

His work is full of light. I like his washing line painting very much.

  2. Bella, I liked that one too. He was just a little old man with a huge talent who was using an empty shop to show his paintings to anyone who would stop by and take the time to look.
