Going underground

Just before Christmas we visited Clearwell Caves to see their festive story display. This is becoming something of a ritual for us as we've been for the past 3 years now.

Each year deep underground the caves become the setting for a magical tale. This year the tale was of a boy who finds a Polar bear cub that he takes home and wants to keep as a pet. As the tale unfolds the little cub wants to go back to his family and so is returned to live the life he should. At the end of the tale the little boys mother gives him a kitten to love and the tale has a happy ending.

It's a simple tale but the way it's told is enchanting and truly magical. Each of the characters are hand made and are nearly live size! The whole place just sparkles with hundreds of fairy lights.

I've only included a few pictures but we were in the caves for probably 2 hours so that gives you some idea of the scale of the thing.

If you're ever in The Forest of Dean at Christmas time do pop in at the caves, you'll love it!
